Women considering a medical abortion via the abortion pill should proceed with caution as there are risks associated with this drug combination. According to the Mayo Clinic, some of these include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion

  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn't work

  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding

  • Infection

  • Fever

  • Digestive system discomfort

What Is the Abortion Pill?

Abortion pills are a combination of two drugs called mifepristone and misoprostol.

First, mifepristone is used to block an essential hormone called progesterone. Without this hormone, the embryo becomes detached from the uterus.

Second, misoprostol is used and causes cramping to occur. When this happens, the body begins to push out the detached embryo and the pregnancy tissue.

What Should I Discuss With a Trusted Medical Professional Before Using the Abortion Pill?

You should always discuss your options with your trusted healthcare provider or pregnancy medical clinic. Understanding what choices you have is important in making an informed decision.

Next, speak with a medical professional about your health history, any medications you take, and any conditions you may have. Some procedures are not deemed safe based on these factors and should be thoroughly discussed with your healthcare provider.

For example, there are over 200 medications that are not recommended to be taken with mifepristone, and those women with certain conditions are not advised to undergo a medical abortion. Take control of your health and get the facts. You deserve to make a wise pregnancy decision for your health and safety.
