Sexually transmitted infections are contagious and typically passed from person to person through sexual or bodily contact. Getting tested regularly is part of early detection, treatment, and learning about prevention. STI testing and treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhea are available services at Liberty Women’s Clinic. Who Is at Risk of Developing an STI?

As STIs don’t always have symptoms, getting tested regularly is important if you’re sexually active. If you do exhibit

symptoms

, they may include:

• Sores or bumps on the genitals or in the oral or rectal area

• Painful or burning urination

• Discharge from the penis

• Unusual or odorous vaginal discharge

• Unusual vaginal bleeding

• Pain during sex

• Sore, swollen lymph nodes, particularly in the groin but sometimes more widespread

• Lower abdominal pain

• Fever

• Rash over the trunk, hands, or feet

are at greater risk for contracting an STI , such as those who:

• Inject drugs

• Are young

• Misuse alcohol or use recreational drugs

• Have a history of STIs

• Are forced to engage in sexual activity

• Have sexual contact with multiple partners

• Have unprotected sex

If you’re pregnant, this gives you an even greater reason to undergo  STI testing, as STIs can be passed onto your unborn child during pregnancy or childbirth which may cause serious or life threatening concerns for the infant.
