An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube.  An ectopic pregnancy is a medical emergency due to the risk of the fallopian tube bursting as the fertilized egg develops which may cause severe life threatening internal bleeding. An ectopic pregnancy needs to be treated right away.Early Symptoms of a possible ectopic pregnancy may include:

  • Vaginal bleeding

  • Lower abdominal, lower back, and pelvic pain

  • Dizziness or weakness

In cases where the fallopian tube has ruptured the following more severe symptoms may occur:

  • Shoulder pain

  • Extreme lightheadedness or fainting

  • Sudden sharp lower abdominal pain

What Causes an Ectopic Pregnancy?

There is no way to prevent an ectopic pregnancy however, there are some ways you can

decrease your risk such as preventing any sexually transmitted infections and choosing not to smoke. You also may be at a higher risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy if you have the following risk factors:

  • A previous ectopic pregnancy

  • A history of infertility

  • A history of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

  • Endometriosis

  • Surgery performed on the fallopian tubes

  • An intrauterine device (IUD)

  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)

  • A history of smoking

  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
