STDs and Pregnancy

Sexual activity not only puts you at risk for pregnancy, but also for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). It’s important to think about your health and safety  regardless of what your intention may be for your pregnancy. If you are sexually active, you should be tested for STI/STDs.

STI and STD: What’s the Difference?

The term STI is used to describe an infection in the body, which may or may not be accompanied by symptoms. The term STD describes an infection that has caused damage in a person’s body. STDs may or may not be accompanied by symptoms. Many STDs can cause damage to you and to your partner.

When you give birth or have an abortion, your cervix can be exposed to any infection you may have contracted, causing you to be vulnerable to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). PID causes constant pelvic pain, infertility problems and can lead to death if untreated. You can also spread the disease anytime you engage in sexual activity. If you are considering an abortion, it is important to get tested for STD/STI first. 

Treatment

Some STI/STDs can be treated and cured with medications, but early detection is key for effective treatment. Other STI/STDs cannot be cured but symptoms can be managed. If you think you have an STI/STD make an appointment with us for chlamydia and gonorrhea testing (two of the most common STIs in Kansas City, MO) and discuss your concerns.
